What a Nakshatra is, why the Moon's Nakshatra at birth matters and how the ruling planet shapes its themes.

A Nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions of the zodiac, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide. The Moon spends roughly one day in each, so the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth (Janma Nakshatra) is one of the main pointers in a Vedic Kundli.

Each Nakshatra is divided into four Padas and is ruled by one of nine planets in a repeating sequence, which is also the basis of the Vimshottari Dasha system. The lord, symbol and deity of a Nakshatra describe its traditional character.

Nakshatras are also used in Muhurat selection: for example Rohini, Uttara Phalguni and Revati are widely preferred for auspicious work. Use the Nakshatra pages on this website for the lord, symbol, deity and themes of each star, and the free Kundli to find your own.
